The Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber became the mainstay of the Navy's air fleet in the Pacific, having the lowest casualty rate of any carrier-based US aircraft. Douglas delivered a total of 5,936 SBD/A-24s from 1940 until the end of production in July 1944.
